Here's how to own a Habitat home...
Each Habitat for Humanity affiliate chooses homeowners based on the same three criteria. Before acceptance as a partner family, the applicant must have:
- a demonstrated need;
- a willingness to become partners in the program;
- the ability to repay the non-profit, no-interest loan.
Neither race nor religion is a factor in choosing the families who receive Habitat houses.
It is important to remember when applying for a Habiitat home that these are not given away for free. Habitat homeowners pay an interest-free mortgage. The mortgage is set at a rate which is based upon the homeowners' current financial position, the final professionally appraised price of the home, and an annual review of the homeowners' financial position.
Habitat for Humanity does not charge interest on these mortgages. Why? Habitat follows biblical principles: "If you lend money to one of my people among you who is needy, do not be like a moneylender; charge him no interest." (Exodus 22:25).
The steps to apply for a home are:
- Attend a home ownership information night where you are provided all of the details of Habitat home ownership including an overview of Habitat, where Habitat is building and the sweat equity program.
- Prepare your application and mail it in. There are a lot of questions to answer and a lot of documents to copy and include in your application.
And if selected for further consideration:
3. Work with the Family Selection Committee (a volunteer committee) when and as they contact you.
Each application is kept in the strictest confidence. The application process is completed within three to four months from the time the application is received. Applicants can reapply yearly.
Home ownership information nights are hosted periodically. Upcoming dates will be posted at a later time. If you have any questions, please feel free to Contact us.
